l will be going away to college in september and l wanna join the volleyball team. l have not played in a six years but have always loved the sport. l really wanna make the team but fear l wo not be good enough. l joined a recreational volleyball league in my area to practice but it is only once a week. Do you thinkthat if l continue to practice from now til september l stand a chance? Back when l use to play l was really good l was on the school team. i'm nineteen by the way. If you could also give me some tips on what the coaches would be looking for that would also be great.

First of all, does the college u will attend have a men is volleyball team? There r not that many NCAA or NAIA-sanctioned men is volleyball programs, but there r a lot of men is college club volleyball teams.

If the college you're attending does have an intercollegiate varsity team, the coaches r out recruiting new players from club programs & some high school teams as well as international programs. It is very rare that u could just walk on & make the team unless you're a phenomenal talent. But u should contact the coaches & tell them you're interested & ask if they have any summer workout suggestions. Team members do a ton of strength & conditioning work over the summer, even the incoming freshmen.

It is a little late in the boys club season, but u could look around ur area & see if there is a team u can practice with. Or join a team that is playing in a USAV league & maybe go to the Nationals, which will be in Minneapolis this year (in late May). Quite a few men is college teams play in the Open or AA championship at Nationals, so some college coaches will be there.

No offense intended, but you probably wo not make them team. University volleyball normally fills up with players who were scouted, and do not even have tryouts. There are tons of kids who have been playing travel and competitive for years, and who deserve it more that you. Now do not get me wrong, if you really want to play-try out. Find some open gyms. l know in California there are many open gyms at places. You just need to look around for some Rec centers that have Open gym volleyball. Coaches look to see if your a LEADER on and off the court, which includes being loud calling for balls, etc. Be confident and dont get down on yourself or other it will all come with practice.
