So l have this awful volleyball coach. Let is call him Steve. Steve has constant mood swings and plays favorites. He makes fun of some people on our club team and others he just loves. He is unfair when it comes to peoplemissing practice and then missing games. He swears all the time. He trys to play the I am your friend and then NOOO I'M YOUR COACH!!! He yells at me for asking questions on defense... and I will I am doing is clarifing or trying to understand his strange directions. The team thinks he is bipolar and were not joking. there is something seriously wrong with his behavior or he is the biggest social claude ever. He is never positive ever. When theres a timeout and l see the positive coaches telling there players the can do this, I am jealous. l want him to stop treating me so badly. My team gets along fairly well and the club is organized. He is just terrible. Someone please help me! (I am in U15s btw)

Coachs do that to make you do better our coach even told us that they might yell at us but they want us to forget about it! But they want you to do better and they know you can!

Well, first off, l hope you have talked to your parents about his behavior. Secondly, please talk to your school counselor and solicit his / her help. l would hope that an adult would have a face to face with this person. Nothing destroys a person is enthusiasm for something than an individual like this.

This is the problem with club coaches. Not all of them have the training to be a coach/teacher. Sure they may know the game of volleyball, but look at ur high school coaches. Most of them r teachers or work in the school. They have been trained how to teach.

A lot of state high school athletic associations limit the amount of time that coaches & players can be together in a volleyball setting. So clubs look to former players to be coaches.

You & ur parents should talk to the club director & tell them how u feel. It may be too late into the season for them to get a new coach, but the club director may come around to practices & games more often to check in on Steve.

One problem with this might be that he is a male teaching females. Men r more competitive naturally, & yelling & doing all of the behavior u mentioned usually works. for coaching boys. It motivates boys to be better. Girls on the other hand, need to be encouraged all of the time & helped along. This is not to say skipping out on punishment if someone is not giving effort. If you're not trying hard on my team, u will be punished somehow. But if u r TRYING & make a mistake. you're trying, & l am happy with that. l am a female also, so do not think l am being sexist with that statement. How boys & girls learn differently is ALWAYS true, but for the most part, u will get better results from a girls team with motivation, not yelling.

Sometimes l get frustrated when l am being asked a lot of questions in practice because sometimes the questions have nothing to do with volleyball & the girls r just talking. So when three girls r around me, & one is asking where she should be, one is asking me what about her approach is wrong, another is asking what l had for lunch, & there r only 20 minutes let in practice, l get a little frustrated. Maybe this is the case when u r asking a question. l would encourage u to ask a teammate or a captain with help first & try to figure it out for yourself before going to him, but make sure you're not asking someone while he is talking. This can easily look like u r not paying attention & just chatting & that would probably make him angry.

About the swearing, if u feel u can approach him, l would mention that it makes u uncomfortable. If he does not stop, or starts back up after a few weeks, remind him or go to whoever is in charge of him & let them know there is an issue. And it is ABSOLUTELY NOT OK for him to be making fun of anyone.

Maybe ur team needs to just have a 20 minutes sit down at the beginning of next practice & get all of their frustrations out with the coach being involved. Make sure everyone knows that teaming up on anyone can hurt the team as a whole. Make general statements, like '' l get frustrated when not everyone is going all out for every ball,'' instead of saying ''Jennifer, l do not like it when u give up on easy to get to balls.'' It is much less threatening, no one will feel picked on, but everyone will get the point. Do not dredge up every single thing that bothers you, but only bring up really important things & move on. And if someone else says something they think is important, do not dismiss them if u do not think it is as important. Make sure ur coach is included & do not gang up on him. This helped resolve a few problems on one of my teams. Afterward we went around the circle & said one good thing about the person to our right. Sappy, but after such a hard talk, it will be a nice ending & then u can get back to practice.

If none of this works, & u talk to whoever is in charge of him & nothing gets fixed, u might just have to suck it up for the rest of this season & avoid having him as a coach after. You might have to switch club teams, & if the rest of ur team hates him too, they will probably switch with you. If u will have him for school ball, l would start a petition now to get him replaced. Make sure u have a solution in mind, such as a possible replacement coach. It will be hard work, but worth it if he really is as crazy as he seems.

You should go to the club director or the club head coach with ur concerns. This guy has clearly never done any Positive Coaching Alliance work.

l used to be sarcastic with kids & was told very clearly, ''Sarcasm is not an effective teaching method.'' So l stopped doing that & my teams improved immediately.

l have seen a lot of coaches who operate the way this guy operates, & they tend to be the less educated coaches. Your club director really needs to intervene. l hope you're able to step up & ask him/her for help because coaches like this really suck the joy out of volleyball.
